Privacy
Privacy policy.
Short version: no accounts, no ads, no tracking cookies. We don’t keep your conversations. We keep common first questions for a day, questions that ran into an error for 30 days, and feedback you choose to send for a year. Your question goes to an AI provider and to the public data sources needed to answer it.
What you send us
When you ask a question, your browser sends that conversation (your questions and the answers so far) to our server. We use it only to answer you. We do not save conversations, and there are no accounts, so nothing ties your questions to you. The exceptions are listed under “What we keep” below.
Please don’t include personal details you wouldn’t want shared, such as your name, phone number or account numbers.
Who else sees your question
- Anthropic, which runs the AI model that writes the answers, receives the conversation. Under Anthropic’s commercial terms it does not train its models on it, and it deletes it within 30 days except where it must keep it to enforce its usage policy. See Anthropic’s retention policy.
- Public data sources receive only what a lookup needs, sent from our server rather than your browser. For example, if you ask who represents your address, the address goes to the U.S. Census Bureau Geocoder to find your district. We use the address only for that lookup and do not store it. The full list is on the Sources page.
- Vercel, which hosts the site, keeps standard server logs such as IP address, time and the page requested. For each question we also log its length, which data sources were used, how long the answer took and its size, but not the question or answer. Vercel also counts page views without cookies and without identifying you.
What we keep
- Error reports. When an answer fails, we keep the error and the question that caused it for up to 30 days so we can fix it. We leave the question out if it was an address lookup or looks like it contains an email address, phone number or street address. Error reports aren’t linked to you or your IP address.
- Feedback. If you rate an answer or send us a comment, we keep the rating, your comment, and the question and answer it was about for up to a year, to improve KnowCivics. For address lookups we keep only the rating and comment. Feedback isn’t linked to you or your IP address.
- Answer cache. Many people ask the same questions, so we keep the first question of a conversation and its answer for up to 24 hours and show the same answer to the next person who asks. Cached questions aren’t linked to you or your IP address. We never cache follow-up questions, address lookups, or questions that look like they contain an email address, phone number or street address.
- Rate limits. To prevent abuse, we count requests per IP address in a small database run by Upstash. Each count expires within 24 hours.
We don’t use advertising or tracking cookies, and we don’t sell or share data with anyone beyond the services named above.
Children
KnowCivics is not directed at children under 13 and doesn’t knowingly collect their data.
